Decimals to Fractions

When converting a decimal to a fraction we must alter the decimal.

Example 1: Convert 0.5 to a fraction in lowest form.

Solution:

The 5 is in the tenths column, so we can say “five tenths”.

Expressed in lowest terms.

Example 2: Convert 1.6 to a fraction in lowest form.

Solution:

1.6

this is “one and six tenths”.
