# Scientific Notation

To write numbers in scientific notation N = u . d d d × 10P with only the units-digit to the left of the decimal and all others following it – and the power P is the position power for the number N.

Multiply and Divide with Scientific Notation and express the result in scientific notation:

Example 1:

 a) (1.23 × 103 ) × (2.32 × 10 4 ) = (1.23 × 2.35 ) × (103 × 10 4 ) Commutative property = 2.8905 × 10 7 Multiply coefficients and add exponents

 b) Write as separate fractions. Divide coefficients and subtract exponents.

 c) Write as separate fractions. Divide coefficients and subtract exponents. Round answer to 3 decimals.

 d) (4.53 × 109 ) × (7.32 × 10 – 4 ) = (4.53 × 7.32) × (109 × 10 – 4) Apply commutative property. = 33.1596 × 105 Multiply coefficients and add exponents = (3.31596 × 101) × 105 Rewrite first term in scientific notation = 3.31596 × (101 × 105) Regroup powers. = 3.31596 × 106 Add exponents for scientific notation.
