Scientific Notation
To write numbers in scientific notation N = u . d d d
× 10P with only the units-digit to the left of
the decimal and all others following it – and the power P is the position power for the number N.
Multiply and Divide with Scientific Notation and express the result in scientific notation:
Example 1:
a) (1.23 × 103 ) × (2.32 × 10 4 )
= (1.23 × 2.35 ) × (103 × 10 4 ) |
Commutative property |
= 2.8905 × 10 7 |
Multiply coefficients and add exponents |
b)
Write as separate fractions. |
Divide coefficients and subtract exponents. |
c)
Write as separate fractions. |
Divide coefficients and subtract exponents. |
Round answer to 3 decimals. |
d) (4.53 × 109 ) × (7.32 × 10 – 4 )
= (4.53 × 7.32) × (109 × 10 – 4) |
Apply commutative property. |
= 33.1596 × 105 |
Multiply coefficients and add exponents |
= (3.31596 × 101) × 105 |
Rewrite first term in scientific notation |
= 3.31596 × (101 × 105) |
Regroup powers. |
= 3.31596 × 106 |
Add exponents for scientific notation. |
